I refer to the Malaysiakini report 1Malaysia camp: 1 drowned, 2 missing .

Words cannot describe my anger upon reading that one life and possibly two more were lost due to the collapse of a new suspension bridge.

What is the use of aspiring to send an astronaut to space or showcasing a ‘Formula1' team when we cannot construct a proper, I would even say, primitive, suspension bridge?

This is not the first time the collapse of a built-up structure has happened. Recently, the roof of the Trengganu stadium collapsed .The Perak State Parks Corporation building collapsed at Pulau Banding about two years ago.

When all these happened, the authorities came up with fanciful warnings like the culprits must be brought to book and that the incidents would be fully investigated. Till today, what is the outcome of their investigation?

I believe they would do the same for this latest incident and over a period of time, it will soon be forgotten.

Without looking into details of all these incidents, my gut feeling is that the root cause of these mishaps is corruption.

Our dismal record in weeding out corruption is too well-known especially when it involves top politicians and the well-connected.

It is this incompetence on the part of the authority that leads to all these uncalled for events.

Had they been fearless and meant business, it would at least instill fear in all those would-be offenders.

No, it is not to be. Sensing that they can get away with illegal activities, their greed for more gain increases and so they shortchange the authorities in the form of poorer quality material or workmanship provided.

All these activities, I am sure, cannot be done unnoticed. I fancy down the line, many palms were greased to ‘close one eye’.

Now that a live is lost, would the MACC spring into action as zealously as they did in the case of Teoh Beng Hock? Or would their investigation eventually draw a blank just like some well documented cases, especially the Lingam tape scandal?

The public is waiting for the outcome.
