Our Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak apparently said on Sunday that racist comments from ‘one or two Umno leaders’ should be ignored because the majority of members in the party were not racists.
‘Umno is not a racist party. From the beginning, we have always wanted a multiracial society. Don’t listen to one or two leaders’ talk,’ he said.
If his speech is taken as per se, our prime minister is inviting many unwanted comments. It can mean he is condoning the comments made by its members.
That Umno will not censor, reprimand or act against any of its members who are making racist remarks.
He also means that there are still racist remarks often made in Umno by the ever present and persistent racist Umno members.
The party has no clear guidelines on how racist remarks will be dealt with in Umno and outside. All this is still left for politiking and the police.
I think now Umno must take a lead in racial matters and walk the talk of a ‘1Malaysia’. Not wait to manage the consequences of racism.
