Wee, Chew, your sacking is not end of the world

I refer to the Malaysiakini report 'Disowned' duo make tearful plea for EGM .

The sacking of MCA central committee members Wee Ka Siong and Chew Mei Fun stunned many people especially the Chinese. Both of them cried publicly and I can feel how much hurt and humiliation they were facing at the time.

‘Nobody’s child’ is the best description for them. I sympathise with them despite the fact that most postings have no mercy on them. I sympathise because I went through a similar situation last year though on a different platform and on a smaller scale when compared with them.

Both of them are of high standing and social status whereas I was just an employed as a senior supervisor at a food company. I am sharing my experience with readers so that you or the people you know would use this as guide when confronted with similar situations because life is full of uncertainties.

Last year in October, I was handed a letter from the human resources department saying that my services would no longer be required after December the same year. I was shocked. I cried inside my heart. Suddenly, I had become ‘nobody’s child. ‘Why me?’, I asked myself.

Prior to receiving the sacking letter, I sacrificed so much by working overtime for at least four days a week till 11pm coming home at almost midnight for six consecutive months to fulfill overseas orders. I recalled that during the annual dinner early last year, the chairperson announced that no employees would be sacked despite the economic downturn around the world.

I believed him. He is the chairperson. Yet, I was sacked. ‘Why me?’, I asked myself again. I decided not to appeal as I knew my chances of getting the job back would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. No point crying in front of your colleagues, no point complaining to others.

So when time came, I just packed up my bags and left the company which I had worked for five years with full commitment.

I immediately set up my network with friends and business associates and told them I was looking for a job and seeking their help. In less than four months, I got my present job which pays a higher salary and has better perks.

On top of that, I finish work at 7pm sharp daily with no overtime hence I enjoy a better quality life – I have time for my family and time to pursue my hobby.

To Wee and Chew, crying is a natural reaction unique to humans only. Who doesn’t cry since the day he was born? Forget what Ong Tee Keat, Chua Soi Lek or other MCA seniors have promised you. Forget what your boss has promised you. Forget the comments against you.

You and I are not the only ones to face present situation. Millions have faced this before. Pack your bags, dry your tears and walk with pride towards the horizon where sun is rising and start a new life. For better or for worse is anybody’s guess. Being sacked is not the end of the world.
