Dire need to investigate Bala's statutory declaration

I refer to the Malaysiakini report 'I was told Rosmah was happy with my retraction' .

Private Investigator P Balasubramaniam made two statutory declarations which obviously contradicted each other. When he made the first SD, the whole nation rose up feeling that the accusations against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor were indeed true.

The following day, he made a second SD in which he said the opposite and that cast doubt on the credibility of Bala himself. Now, after being on the run for more than a year, he claims that the contents of the first SD were the truth and the second SD was made under duress and fears that his family might be harmed.

He now claims that he was paid RM750,000 of the five million ringgit that he was promised to retract his first SD. To some of us, it seems to be a case of Bala being shortchanged in that the five million ringgit bribe was not paid.

Aside from these claims and allegations that Bala has made to the electronic media, he was also interviewed by three senior lawyers of high standing.

The question that ought to be asked is, why are the authorities akeeping quiet about Bala’s serious allegations? At the very least, investigation papers should have been opened to investigate the two contradicting SDs and also his latest claim of bribery and threats against him and his family.

Whilst some may argue that Bala is a sore loser in this game, it is pertinent that the allegations made in the SDs and his latest allegations of threats and inducement are criminal matters that should be investigated and not dismissed as hearsay.

Sweeping such serious allegations under the carpet would not in any way create public confidence in the authorities and the people implicated in the SD and by Bala during his recent interviews.

It is a crime under the Malaysian criminal justice system to force or induce anybody to withdraw a sworn declaration.

I would urge the authorities, in the larger interest of our beloved nation, to open investigations into this case so that the truth shall prevail.
