Are fresh polls the answer to MCA's crisis?

This is my response to your piece Najib: MCA leaders have agreed to fresh polls .

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has revealed that MCA leaders have agreed to hold fresh elections.

It is only a matter of time before they tender their resignations. It is quite shocking that the prime minister once again put the pressure on MCA to hold fresh elections.

The sentiment on the ground - members seem unbothered. Members are generally tired and bored. What they wish to see is a speedy end to the party crisis, with the status quo option the most likely choice.

Holding fresh elections is only one of the options. There are many more options to explore when the CC meets again.

As it stands now, the opinion market is monopolised by Rimbunan Hijau from Sarawak. Under the flagship of Rimbunan Hijau, all major Chinese press plus Chinese guilds and associations like Hua Zong and ACCCIM have meddled heavily into MCA internal affairs.

They wanted to ‘teach' MCA what to do in order to prove that they are more capable and fully in charge of Chinese community leadership. In some private instances, they even claim that they could mobilise Chinese support for BN, much better than MCA could.

Therefore, as the call for fresh elections escalates, these Chinese press and association leaders join in to fish in the troubled waters. They pretend to care for MCA but actually they are positioning themselves to replace MCA.

They would definitely become more important in the eyes of Umno and government once MCA is further weakened and divided by another round of vote-canvassing and heavy politicking.

Even without going into details, some basic questions must be answered.

Firstly, the demand to hold fresh elections is only backed by a minority group in the CC. This group had tried to convince the central delegates by holding an EGM on Nov 28 but it was aborted due to insufficient quorum.

Secondly, apart from the 13 elected CC members who petitioned for the Nov 28 EGM, the majority of the CC members are not willing to quit voluntarily.

These CC members cannot and must not be forced to resign.

Thirdly, Youth chief Wee Ka Siong and Wanita chief Chew Mei Fun have refused to resign, creating good excuses for others not to follow suit.

Fourth, CC members are reluctant to quit as fresh elections carry with them a lot of hidden and unhidden risks, more so with CC members who have government posts.

Fifth, if the wishes of minorities in the party and opinions expressed by a few outsiders can be taken into account, it will spell the beginning of the end for MCA.

MCA CC members cannot even defend their own rights, how could they defend the rights of members and the community at large?

Isn't it silly and naive to think that intense campaigning and vote canvassing during fresh elections would renew and strengthen the party further?
