I read an interesting article in the papers recently which made me to Google the internet for some information on how much average Malaysians kids are getting as their monthly allowance a month. I’ll discuss about the article later but let’s see the breakdown of household income of Malaysians under the Eight Malaysia Plan (I couldn’t find the information under the Ninth Malaysia Plan).
Household Income (RM/month)
More than RM5,000 9.8%
RM4,001 - RM5,000 5.5%
RM3,001 - RM4,000 9.6%
RM2,001 - RM3,000 17.4%
RM1,001 - RM2,000 32.7%
RM501 - RM1,001 20.0%
Less than RM500 5.0%
According to a survey done by the Statistics Department for the Economic Planning Unit, published in ‘Personal Money’ magazine June 2008 edition, a typical family in Malaysia earns only RM3,686 a month.
Without going into complex mathematical formulas, let’s simply assume that an average family, having two children, spends about 10% of their income as monthly allowance for their kids.
Please remember that this is only their pocket money and has nothing to do with their educational expenses.
Therefore, an average Malaysian kid gets about RM184 per month. Now, coming back to that report , I’ll just reproduce a few paragraphs for your attention.
‘Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and his son, the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, put aside protocol when they shared their passion for cars with 22 Ferrari owners who visited the palace here yesterday.
‘Tengku Amir Shah, who is a classic and modern car enthusiast, said he was thankful for the donation as it would enable more youths to be part of the sponsorship programmes conducted by the foundation.
‘It will help keep the programmes running and help young people excel in various fields including grooming and engineering courses,’ he told The Star.
‘The prince also revealed that he donated RM10,000 of his RM13,000 monthly allowance to the foundation.
That is a cool 6,965% more than an average Malaysian kid. Now, don’t you all wish that you will become a prince or princess in your next life?
