The beauty of mainstream media reporting

The beauty of the mainstream media in Malaysia is their ability to turn biased reporting into an art form. The Star screams ‘...Pakatan under siege’, ‘PKR in crisis’, ‘Opposition party collapsing ...’

This as three rather insignificant and very much irrelevant individuals who calls themselves members of Parliament ‘just decided’ to turn ‘independent’ (whatever that means to them).

Several pages of the newspaper are dedicated to this piece of news which is essentially about the tragedy of three men's betrayal of the people but reported as if it is a celebration of the might of money and power.

It is not only a dramatisation of a piece of news but it is also a demonstration of how low the values of such a newspaper have become.

On the other hand, The Star then chose the headline ‘MCA polls set for March 28' when in my opinion the headline should have screamed ‘MCA in crisis ... again’.

But of course The Star wouldn't do that. The way the newspaper chose to report it is as if a very ordinary event like the sudden resignation of several top officials of MCA has just happened, and a get-together is being organised by MCA, who happens to be the second-largest political party in Malaysia, to re-elect these people who happened to be just elected (twice, I think) over the last year.

So that's it. Some people resigned, and so ‘fresh polls’ are needed. No drama. It is as if this is a routine event and even a ‘cleansing process’ that is ‘needed for the party to move ahead’ when, in my opinion, this story is about treachery, corruption, power-play, betrayal, intimidation and manipulation that has acted itself out for the last one year.

The Star doesn't seem to think so. Such is the beauty of mainstream media reporting .
