It has been the most welcome news in the midst of this circus. After the ‘clowns’ have had centre stage for the last few months, we finally have some form of sanity in the form of ex-MCA president Ong Ka Ting. His reluctant comeback has been received with eager applause.

Reluctant because as a principled man, he believes coming back would be an about-turn after his resignation following the March 8 general election. Eager because we feel that he is the only person who can bring calm to the chaos and unite the divided factions – as he has done in the past.

So why has the ‘dragon’ entered the court? Because he feels responsible for this party that he helmed for five years during which he put in place reforms that encouraged confidence and promoted integrity in the party.

These are desperate times. And it is said that we are looking for desperate measures. Are we? No.

Ong Ka Ting is a necessary measure. Many will accuse him of going back on his word, of returning for personal glory, but Ka Ting has done none of this. His gave his word that he would take full responsibility.

This is precisely what he has done – first when he resigned, and now, when he has put aside personal pride and returned at the risk of tainting his successes and a record of fair play and unity.

For the cynics, we remind you that he has willingly put himself in a precarious position – Ka Ting has everything to lose by returning. Knowing him, he certainly isn’t looking for a ministerial post. To build a dynasty? Nonsense. If he wanted to he would have done it during the five years he was in power.

The ‘dragon’ has proven himself as the guardian of our party. He is here to restore dignity and we cheer him on. It is also easy to blame the leadership crisis in the party because he is said to have put in place the same people who have created the current fracas.

But what people do not realise is that it was he who built upon the grassroots, the foundation. This has allowed the party to keep themselves grounded, even as its roof has blown away in the storm.

We do not expect him to win this battle on his own because no one can. But he is a person who can start the process of reform. And with the support that he has, he will surely be able to go far.
