MACC should learn from ROS' perseverance

I think the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has a lot to learn from ROS in how they go about investigating matters. So far all we have had from MACC is excuse after excuse of why their high profile cases against such as those reports against Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud have not yielded results.

But ROS has shown that legalities and points of law are no obstacle to getting to the bottom of the truth they desire. So why can’t MACC follow their example, and form a task force to look into how to press charges in the various reports against the big fish?

So far the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) have not had any proof of wrongdoing by Suaram, yet they seem to have stepped up into high gear in investigating every nook and cranny of the NGO that has essentially done nothing but community work.

More interestingly, they claim to be prepared to file charges, as soon as they know what they are, meaning they have decided to charge Suaram first, and is looking for wrongdoing to back it up.

The finer points of law don't seem to be a concern to ROS, such as why they are probing a registered company when it is not under their jurisdiction. So some remote person lodged a complaint against Suaram with ROS. In the real world ROS would need to tell the complainant to take it to the right agency, that is CCM.

Instead, the ROS has gone all out to help this complainant "satisfy" his/her apparent "dissatisfaction" by going beyond its jurisdiction in calling up Suaram to answer to the complaint.

MACC, on the other hand, seems to be having trouble investigating reports of various high level corruption for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they cite lack of proof, or that no one has complained.

Take for example the many exposes on the National Feedlot Corporation's (NFC) various actions that are 'mencurigakan' (worrying). So far, only NFC's boss has been charged on one of the complaints, the purchase of the Bangsar condominiums.

What about all the other many, many issues related to NFC? What has happened to those? I don't think the rakyat is very 'satisfied' with action taken so far. We still do not see the RM250 million being returned to its righful place, in the rakyat's coffers.

Similarly the government has not acted on complaints by former CCID chief Ramli Yusuff against the attorney-general (AG) and former IGP as well.

It would be far better if these agencies adopt ROS's gung ho attitude, then perhaps we may be able to get to the bottom of real corruption and misdeeds, instead of hounding Suaram to try and find something to pin on them.

And yes, we all know that is nothing to do with the Scorpene case in France. It's just that someone, whoever it is, has complained and the very efficient government cannot be seen to be doing nothing.

We are truly convinced.
