PCA just shifting the blame for crime situation

The proposed amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) is a matter of shifting the problem to law enforcement while the main authorities feel vindicated and free from blame in the event when something goes amiss.

A nation claiming to project a modern and progressive outlook does not take a step backward to introduce draconian and inhuman regulations to undermine and further humiliate the populace who are already subjected to detainees dying under dubious and seemingly mysterious circumstances.

Why introduce stringent and authoritarian rules while overlooking the root causes for increase in crime especially committed by youngsters from a certain community in this country?   .

By extending the detention period which can be implemented at will without question, does it not make us any different from countries like North Korea?

By extending the detention period, do you think it is going to serve as a deterrent factor?

A young person being incarcerated for a long period can turn more aggressive and wild with constant and incessant interrogation and perhaps abuse, which may even result in more deaths under custody. Past records do not give any confidence.

By the time one challenges any detention order in the court, it may still take awhile for a decision and during that time, the detainee will languish in an overcrowded prison.

Who is to blame if the crime rates increase?

Do we blame the parents who may lack parental control over the child and thus the child grows without proper guidance and eventually joins bad company?

Do we blame society for not having any useful and productive programmes to cater for youngsters who lack academic prowess? If such programmes exist, are they implemented properly with close supervision for effective results?

Are the enforcement and control effective enough to deter the inflow of illicit and dangerous drugs into the country? It is also a main contributor for the increase in crime to feed the habit and commit heinous offences? It is still a big menace in the country.

Each elected representative has a role to play to safeguard his own constituency from criminal activities with close monitoring and close liaison with law enforcers.

Thus  if we look at it at a wider perspective, not only is the government shifting the problem by empowering the police further, the whole society at large too is giving a lukewarm attention or approach to the deterioration of moral and social values among our youngsters.

Having seen a number of comments in the media as to what can and cannot be done over the proposed amendments, I get the impression there exists a number of ambiguities.

.

Thus it is left to anybody's guess as to what one can expect if it is passed.

However, it does not augur well for the country which can be seen as incapable of controlling its social and moral decadence while focussing on grandeur

We are as strong as our weakest link.
