Manjit Bhatia ( Dr M's choice in homosexual to persecute? ) asks: ''What business is it of Mahathir's, or anyone else's in Umno, if a person is homosexual?''

While it may not be anyone's business in Australia, for example, it is still the law of the land in Malaysia, as entrenched under section 377 of the Penal Code, that certain 'homosexual' acts (although the word 'homosexual' or 'homosexuality' is not mentioned) are criminal and punishable with 20 years imprisonment and canning.

This is not to mention that under Syariah law in several Malaysian states, homosexual acts between Muslims are illegal and can attract jail terms of up to three years as well as mandatory whipping.

So, until those laws — which some argue are antiquated — are repealed, it is very much the business of those in positions of authority that a person has committed a proscribed 'homosexual' act (not, I suppose, that a person is a homosexual).

That being so, we Malaysians may be forgiven for not wishing to answer Manjit's challenge when he asks: ''When will Malaysians tell their political representatives that they have had enough of their stupidity?'' solely on that basis!
