Umno Youth's act in lodging a police report on malaysiakini for a letter appearing on Jan 9 this year is the typical act of orang Melayu dah tidak ada idea lagi (Malays have run out of ideas).
It's a shot in the dark and very possibly part of some lame-brain plan to paralyse independent media, since 2003 is a possible election year. So free media supporters should rally in support of malaysiakini hands down.
I did not read that letter
when it was posted. After reading it today, I did not find the contents offensive in the least. It is reflective of the history of Malaysia since the Alliance — now the Barisan Nasional — came to power. It is a version of history retold perhaps in a way which offends Umno but certainly not pro-democracy Malaysians of which I hope we have become since the sacking of former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim. We have reached a new dawn since September 1998. There is no looking back.To my mind, Umno Youth's report merely reflects the political culture of Umno which is on the way out, if it is not already dead but for Umno-nites only. We must face this squarely and round up support for a free Malaysia.
