When I registered with the Election Commission (EC) before the 1999 general election, my address was, and still is, Lot 1830, Kg Malaiperumal, 31000, Batu Gajah, Perak.

But according to the EC records, my address was, and still is, Kg Pasir Baru Sg Trap - I have no idea where this is. Therefore, I was and still am supposed to be in the Gopeng parliamentary constituency (071) and Sungai Rapat state constituency (071/43).

I wrote a letter to The Sun earlier, highlighting this matter and left it at that. As it was too late to change, I voted in Batu Gajah, under the respective constituencies of Gopeng and Sungai Rapat.

Recently, I mentioned this to Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan, who took the trouble to check with EC for me. She said the officer in charge confirmed that it was a mistake on their part. Just like that!

I now have to go to their office in Ipoh to rectify the EC's mistake. Although the officer had said the this can be done at the nearest post office, I have my doubts as my friend went twice to the post office and was told they cannot change addresses.

One disturbing fact is that I have voted for the opposition before. If the general perception - that how we voted can be traced - then I believe there has been some hanky panky in the EC. Otherwise, how could an address clearly stated as "Kg Malaiperumal" become "Kg Pasir Baru Sg Trap"? How can such a mistake occur?

I wonder how many similar mistakes have happened. The only way EC can allay my fear is by informing voters through newspapers to change their address at the nearest post office, if there is a mistake.

In this era of computerisation, I am still wondering why it is not possible to link the EC records to that of the National Registration Department (NRD).

If this is done, then there can be automatic voter registration when a person comes of age. There will be no danger of duplication of voter registration, no phantom voters (assuming the NRD record is correct) and everybody will be able to vote in their own constituency.

We already have the most high-tech identity card and passport, so what are we waiting for?
