To some extent, I agree with Fahri Azzat's letter, ' Pet owners must be responsible too '.
Just like Fahri, I love dogs too.
However, as a non-Muslim Malaysian, I have to be honest and say that the many legislation or ordinances passed by the authorities carries the flavour of Islamisation - e.g. pork cannot be sold on certain days.
Although I have much to say about the fear of Islamisation, my intention of writing this letter is to show that I too, like Fahri, loves animals, but cannot understand why pet owners are not worried about inconveniencing neighbours, caused by the barking and smelly urine of their pets.
My British neighbour often takes her dog for a walk and as usual her dog urinates at the side of the house. Only last week, I showed my disappointing face (without opening my mouth) at her when she stood next to her dog urinating on our side of the house. She arrogantly asked: "are you alright?" I replied by shaking my head (again without saying anything). She then raised her voice, "dogs need to go to toilet too!" This made me respond: "Yah you can use your own grass as his toilet!"
I love cats more than dogs. When I was a child, my family raised many cats. All of them are smart. They never urinate in the house as they always go to either the neighbours' garden or roadside. I always praised my cats for doing that. But now, I am a grown up man who does not have time to have cats as pets. Unfortunately, my other two British neighbours' cats always "do their businesses" on our grass. Sometimes, I accidentally step on them. Now, I know how my childhood neighbour feels
As Malaysian, we know that many Malays loves cats very much. However, sometimes at night the cats would sing on top of their voice. Isn't the animal also causing much nuisance to their neighbours?
Yes, I agree that the authorities should take serious step in ensuring that neighbours' pets do not cause any nuisance. In addition, to show that the authorities are not Islamising local council regulations , then those who own cats should also be required to obtain permission from their neighbours.
I am sure that Fahri would agree with me that all owners should be responsible for the conduct of their pets.
