Sometime last year, it was reported that the DAP had done a survey in Penang that Penangites would prefer Lim Kit Siang, the party chairman, and Karpal Singh, his deputy, to contest only in parliamentary seats in Penang.

Having followed the parliamentary careers of these two personalities from the opposition, I truly believe that they can still play a very prominent role in parliament, should they be successful on polling day. The people have not forgotten the sacrifices, perseverance, integrity and contribution of the DAP duo.

In the last Parliament, we have had MPs who do not care much about attending parliament. And when they do attend some are either asleep or are just there to make the quorum and do not participate actively in debates. If our parliamentary proceedings can be telecast live on TV, I am sure most of our MPs would buck up.

I am certain both Lim and Karpal do make excellent MPs. Their understanding of parliamentary procedures is second to none. Some may not agree with me but from what I have seen and read, they have always performed their duties diligently as MPs in parliament.

Due to their experience and legal training, they have kept the people aware of the implications of any new legislation being tabled which may affect the rights of the people.

Parliament was deprived of these two dynamic personalities when both lost the seats they contested in the 1999 general election due to their party's mistake in joining the opposition coalition which included a fundamentalist party. That did not go down well with the electorate.

Lim and Karpal, whether you love or hate them, are often seen as the beacon of the opposition. They will fight tooth and nail to ensure that the people's rights are not trampled upon.

I am sure some of our MPs from the dissolved parliament would grudgingly admit that the DAP duo's incisive comments and insight into legislation and government were sorely missed in the last Parliament.

The 11th general election could decide the fate of these two politicians. Win and they will probably make the parliamentary sessions more exciting again.

Lose and they may have to retire from politics.
