In another 100 years time, the Chinese will only form five percent of Malaysia's total population. Is this cause for concern?
The answer is a simple yes. Why? Because in Malaysia, everything is about numbers. The MCA currently has quite a number of Chinese-majority and mixed seats to contest, but come 2100, the situation will be very different.
Probably then, there will be no more Chinese-majority seats. Maybe, there will be only one Chinese minister then to reflect the ratio of population. And Penang will have a Malay chief minister.
I'm not trying to be chauvinistic here. But let's face the facts. The current population ratio is at present healthy and should be able to provide a stable platform for the nation's progress. After all, Malaysia's strength lies largely in its cultural diversity and population make-up.
But we cannot expect the bumiputeras to have as little children as us. There's no more an influx of Chinese to Malaysia (the government will never allow that). Instead, the Chinese here are migrating to other countries.
What has the MCA done all this while, knowing that the future of Chinese Malaysians is at stake? Does MCA think that by launching its so-called, much publicised Cupid's Club, they will be able to increase the Chinese population?
Much more needs to be done. Many Chinese couples stop at two children for the simple fact that they can't afford an extra child. What can the MCA do to assist them?
I urge the MCA to come up with better ideas, instead of its Cupid's Club programme, to increase or, at least maintain the present Chinese population percentage.
