I fully agree with the writer's view that action needs to be taken to increase or at least maintain the Chinese Malaysian population. At about 30 percent, now, our voice is barely heard. I can't imagine where we will stand when it is down to 5 percent. Should we take a good look at one of our neighbouring countries?
But calling on the MCA to come out with ideas or incentives to increase the Chinese population must be some kind of joke. I doubt any among the party's present leadership has the guts to plan for an 'increase' in population - they might incur the wrath of their masters. Anyway, they won't live to see the day when we become that 5 percent, so why would they care?
I guess a better option would be to get the Chinese Chambers of Commerce and other clan-based associations to come out with incentives for Chinese couples to produce more babies. At least these bodies will be doing it for the community's sake, rather than thinking of their own short-term interests. I believe they can afford it.
Even if they can't, I believe there are enough well-off Chinese individuals who are willing to contribute to a fund, where those that can bear more offspring be encouraged to do so. These families can then turn to this fund in seeking financial assistance for their children from birth to adulthood, including for hospitalisation costs, scholarships and housing.
As the Chinese like to say, 'Got money contribute money, got energy contribute energy.'
On another front, why don't we have more labour from the Chinese mainland, more maid perhaps? If we can have workers from all corners of the world, why not some from China?
Our ancestors were immigrants too and the Malaysian administration has to realise that banning Chinese workers is futile in the face of globalisation and the emergence of China as a dominant economic power. As long as Chinese workers are able to contribute positively to our economy, they should be welcomed. We have after all welcomed millions of Bangladeshis, Filipinos and Indonesians.
And oh, lastly, in my humble opinion, MCA's Cupid's Club is just for publicity, not really to help single Chinese Malaysians. Wake up. Forget about our so-called representative representing us, they are representing only themselves.
Anyway, we don't need help from a fake Cupid. What we need is assistance to even out the playing field, so that we'll have time to go courting.
