An outlandish proposal over leaked UPSR papers

With another two more papers confirmed leaked, it is perhaps time for a drastic solution.

Allow me to propose this outlandish idea - requests for ‘A’ grades to be granted by the Education Ministry without any conditions - an idea borrowed from the ‘When the buying stops, the killing can, too’ anti-shark’s fin soup consumption campaign.

The aim is to stop any future demands for leaked examination paper, thus sparing the majority of pupils, parents and teachers from suffering due to the dishonest conduct of a few pupils, parents and individuals.

Those prepared to cheat by getting their hands on leaked examination papers at all cost can now simply put in a request (with the consent of their parents) for ‘A’ grades for any subject they so wish. The ministry will duly grant them their wish without any conditions or fees imposed.

The real purpose of education is to acquire knowledge. Yet to some, their main and sole aim is getting straight As at all costs. For whatever reasons, even their parents are ever willing to pay for leaked papers. This proposal will put a stop to the demand for leaked examination papers. Tuition centres can now concentrate on real teaching and learning instead of the misguided aim of helping them target all As.

Likewise, teachers and schools will face less pressure to produce straight As students and can go back to their true role of educating our children.

But for the best part, thousands of our honest and hardworking children and teachers will not be subjected to unnecessary misery through no fault of theirs.

In any case, re-sitting for exams will not be a true reflection. Some demoralised ones, like my son, will not be bothered with going through the whole gamut of remembering and regurgitating facts, while others who have more time to study stand a chance of getting grades better than they would actually have got.

I appeal to the ministry to go ahead with marking, grading and releasing these leaked examination papers results alongside those for the re-sit exams. These grades are a better yardstick of the true ability of hundreds of thousands of our honest children. I for one would like to know and will treasure these grades more than the re-sit ones, for it would more accurately reflect my child’s genuine effort and ability.

Those few who had access to leaked papers can have the fantastic grades they have ‘earned’.
