I have been silently observing the many letters expressing views on the recent High Court conversion case . However Arbibi Ashoy's letter is simply begging for rebuttal.
To start with, he or she offers a very 'unique' interpretation of Islam as the official religion. Where exactly does it say in our constitution that when one parent is Muslim and the other non-Muslim, the national religion takes precedence?
To offer an opinion that this is the best for the children is that writer's prerogative. To give the examples that Arbibi did, is downright stupidity and magnifies his or her narrow-minded perception of the concept of Islam as the national religion as enshrined in the constitution.
Let it be stated well and clear that constitutionally, any Malaysian citizen can become prime minister. Never mind if that is not practically possible. That is a whole different issue though a heartache nonetheless.
Stating that many top jobs are reserved for Muslims is pushing it. I don't argue the logical accuracy of that statement. While it is deeply regretful that certain jobs appear to be only for those of a certain race/religion, it is sickening to note this fact being flaunted, advertised even, as a reason why being Muslim is better.
The writer also stated that many Jews converted to Christianity for an improved quality of life. I don't know of the numbers and whether the use of the word 'many' is justified. But whatever the case, that is their choice.
If they had sold their religion for privileges, so be it. I will not do it and I certainly wouldn't want the religion of my kids to be 'chosen' for them in the most unfair manner - so that they may enjoy a supposedly better life.
Well, one may have it easier by being a Muslim/Malay in this country, but I'd stay non-Muslim /non-Malay and challenge the odds like so many have done before and succeeded despite all the difficulties!
