Oktoberfest storm - let's eat, drink and be merry

Oktoberfest is a celebration in Malaysia that has been going on for decades. It is nothing new. So, what is the problem?

I therefore fail to see the anguish it is generating in some sectors of the public requesting for drastic legislation actions to be taken and even urgings to upset the peace and tranquility of the nation. Don't we have more important things to worry about and tackle in Malaysia than to bother about an issue so trivial like this?

The organisers promoting the event have every right to build awareness and persuade participation to generate sales. No one is forced to participate. Everyone has a free will to act according to what his conscience or religion dictates.

An activity like this does generate revenue and extra employment for Malaysians as part-time promoters need to be employed. Beer sales will also fuel the wheels of the Malaysian economy and benefit the country. Is this bad?

Alcohol, like everything else, in itself is not a problem. Anything in excess is bad. In fact, ice cream, soft drinks and bakeries are contributing more to problems like obesity among Malaysians. Do we stop them from operating or exercise self control in our daily sugar intake?

Alcohol, in fact, has its benefits and many medical practicioners would recommend a glass of wine a day to protect the heart and keep the blood flowing.

In a multiracial and religious country like Malaysia, the rights of all need to be protected. We are not a homogeneous population where everyone belongs to the same race and religion. The urging for supporters to rally against the event and venues celebrating the festival is disrespectful to the other races that do not feel the same.

It is an outright infringement of their rights. We also hope the local government and new state cabinet will exercise wisdom in making decisions over matters like these if sincere in protecting the interests of all Malaysians.

It would help if Malaysians start using their brains instead of their hearts in everything they do. It will definitely minimise unnecessary self created problems.

Let us continue to eat, drink and be merry! Happy Oktoberfest!
