Kalimullah Hassan in the New Sunday Times tried very hard to argue that there was really nothing wrong in appointing the prime minister's son-in-law Khairy Jamaludin to Khazanah Berhad as he richly deserves to be appointed, being well-qualified for the job.
The parallel is drawn between him and Azalina Othman. But there is no adverse criticism in the case of Azalina because she is not related to the prime minister, whereas Khairy is to be condemned because he happens to be the son-in-law.
Well, the writer's argument is quite convincing except that nepotism is still nepotism however well-qualified Khairy may be. The definition of nepotism is to 'favour one over another because of blood relationship'.
So, like it or not, moves to appoint Khairy are justifiably criticised. And there is no need to hide behind the argument that it is the board of Khazanah and not the prime minister who wants the appointment made as everyone knows that such an important thing would not occur without the prime minister being consulted first.
The furore over Khairy is to some extent brought about by the prime minister's own doing as it is he who proclaimed a national moral transparency policy . Therefore, he must remain consistent with his policy.
While on Khazanah, this hype on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is well and good. But could anyone tell me what is the role and mandate of Khazanah? How can you measure KPIs when you have not set out the objectives?
