Hijri New Year time to unite towards betterment

The Hijri calendar or Muslim calendar is the calendar used by Muslims, including in determining the date or month in connection with worship or other important days. This calendar began after the Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah in 622AD.

Each year we will celebrate annual events according to one’s individual belief. There are those who celebrate by partying and entertainment, but in Islam we celebrate the remembrance of the events of the migration of the Prophet Muhammad with his followers from Makkah to Madinah following various challenges.

They worked together towards betterment because all their life in Makkah, they had faced various threats from their enemies. After their migration to Madinah, they were greeted by the good people of Madinah, and it was the beginning of a calmer and more peaceful life.

Next year the goods and services tax (GST) is to be implemented, and many still have doubts although the government has said it guarantees the prices of goods will not be increased. The effect of rising oil prices had led to the prices of almost all goods to rise. But despite falling oil prices in the world market, the government has not been able to lower the price of petrol locally.

Problems of rural areas still not having adequate infrastructure should be given attention by the government. Those in rural and urban areas who have yet to be given permanent residence should also be given priority.

The Sarawak chief minister said that there are more than 5,000 villages across the state in an area approximately the same as that of peninsular Malaysia. He promised to focus on the development and upgrading of facilities and needs in rural areas, to be better than that in peninsular Malaysia. “I think it’s time we stop helping the rich but not the poor,” added the chief minister.

Although billions of ringgit have been allocated to Sabah and Sarawak, the people in Sarawak in general still live in poverty because the benefits of the provisions and projects continue to be enjoyed by the capitalists and their cronies who have vested interests.

People’s expectations in each New Year are the same, namely to see change as a whole and not just hear about billions of ringgit, but to enjoy the benefits from these allocations.

In conjunction with the New Year of 1436 Hijriah simultaneously with Oct 25, 2014, Sarawak PAS wishes to express Salam Maal Hijrah to all Malaysians wherever they are.
