I feel that the young people stationed at the toll booths to collect toll should be put to work in factories. They are young and energetic but spend most time chit-chatting with their colleagues and then put on grumpy faces when we pull up at the booths.
I visited Japan on numerous occasions and every time I go through a toll booth, I am greeted with a broad smile and a pleasant 'good morning', good afternoon or 'good night' from the people manning the booths. Almost all of them are senior citizens.
Here in Malaysia we talk about a shortage of manpower and employ foreign workers. But we have an abundant untapped labour source in our senior citizens who can and are happy to take up jobs such as manning toll booths.
The young people currently manning the booths are wasting their time as there is no future and prospects for them in such jobs.
They should take on jobs that are more challenging or learn a trade to better themselves instead of wasting their time manning toll booths.
This is only one of the many areas where senior citizens can help reduce labour shortage. Seriously, somebody should look into this.
