This is in reference to a Malaysiakini article ' GST on cinema tickets won't affect sales ' which appeared in Malaysiakini 's website and Facebook on Dec 11, 2014. Based on the article, we understand that Malaysiakini picked up the story from China Press ' Dec 11 edition.

Please take note that we are clarifying with the China Press on the actual facts which was shared with the China Press reporter. The key details are as follows:

a) GSC expects a dip in admission in 2015, but will mitigate this with the good slate of blockbuster movies and GSC value added promotion to drive traffic to the cinemas. Going to the cinemas for movies is part and parcel of today’s out of home entertainment. Key drivers for cinema admission are the contents/movies and the ticket affordability factor.

b) In the China Press editorial piece, the ticket pricing stated was for GSC Signature (GSC Boutique cinemas) but this was not indicated in the China Press article and can be misleading, as it gives the impression that this is the pricing for all GSC cinemas. Please take note that cinema ticket pricing differs from location to location and for blockbuster movies. In the ticket pricing comparision between GSC and MBO, the ticket pricing was for GSC Mid Valley but that was not indicated the boxed up information in the said China Press article either.

c) Just for information GSC offers special rates for children, senior citizens, Wed pricing and this pricing differs from location to location also. Gold Class ticket pricing is a flat rate for per entry regardless whether it is an adult, child, student, etc.

d) The full details of the Entertainment Act 1953 and the amount of previous entertainment tax info prior 2011 was not provided from GSC, the reporter may have obtained this information from another source.
