Thank you Zahid Abbas for your enlightened views on Islam Hadhari. I couldn't agree with you more.

I am not a Muslim, but what you have said in your article is absolutely right.

I have read religious books of all types and denominations. A recent one, which I picked up from a private collection, is called The sayings of Mohammad by Allama Sir Abdullah al-Mamun al-Suhrawardy.(published by John Murray of London ,1941.)

Interestingly, the foreword of this book is written by none other than the great Mahatma Gandhi, father of peaceful resistance himself.

I would like to quote a few lines from this enlightening book in support of your letter.

'According to Abu Daub, only four sayings of the Prophet are indispensable for the religious guidance of man, and contain the summary of Islamic Law.

1) Actions will be judged according to intentions.

2) The proof of a Muslim's sincerity is that he payeth no heed to that which is not his business.

3) No man is a true believer unless he desireth for his brother that he desireth for himself.

4) That which is lawful is clear, and that which is unlawful, likewise, but there are certain doubtful things between the two from which it is well to abstain.'

Personally, I find these four sayings very meaningful. God has given us a conscience and if we are in doubt, we should reverse the situation and place ourselves on the receiving end. If we then think the answer is right then we do it.

If these sayings alone were taught to our children as the Universal Truths from God, I think many of our social and political problems could be solved.

What our children are taught today in schools and at home is exactly the opposite. No wonder we produce adults and politicians who are bigoted individuals, self-serving and wishing all for himself, but nothing for anyone else.

Let us hope the Islam Hadhari we are promised is not going to end up as being another slugging match between Umno and PAS as to who can 'Islam Hadhari' better!
