Merdeka celebrations are just around the corner. As in the past few years, I am sure someone playing to the gallery will insist that flying a flag at your premises or vehicle is a testament of an undying patriotic spirit - implying that the spirit is lacking in those who don't.

In fact it has already started among some radio deejays but has not been heard from the mouths of any politicians yet.

So this is my pre-emptive shot. I will not be flying a flag as I don't need to do so to show my patriotic stand.

I obey the laws, I don't smoke in prohibited places, I pay my bills and taxes on time, I don't behave in a moronic way on the roads and generally undertake my work in a manner befitting my profession.

I am patriotic and I don't need any symbol to show this. In fact, I hope this year, no one will fly a rag tag, torn to bits flag on vehicles not fit to be on the road or from buildings surrounded by rubbish and dirt.

For those public officials who may speak before they think and upset communities only to retract their statements later, please don't.
