Dr G Walter expresses a very one-sided view in his latest letter Spare us your bitterness, emigrants .

His is an obstinate opinion that could presumably only have been formed from having little to no association with others of differing backgrounds.

In his own bitterness, Walter forgets to see the reasons as to why many choose to resort to uprooting everything to settle in another land.

For many who chose to emigrate, myself included, money is way down in the priority list. I assume this to be true for the majority of legitimate emigrants, who are either qualified professionals, skilled technicians or successful businessmen in their own right. They have much to lose in terms of salary or seniority.

But there are still others who see everything good and excellent in the country. They refuse to acknowledge the decline of discipline and morality, the decline of lawlessness, the decline of judicial independence, the decline of parliament itself.

Do they care that the nation is mired by in corruption with scandal after scandal and the government doing nothing (in fact, they have a hand in it, themselves)?

Do they care when the court is being made a kangaroo of in the jailing of Anwar Ibrahim?

Do they care when their children's places at university are usurped?

There are countless things that those of the same ilk as Walter may not care about. But there are many who do.
