I happened to be at the very popular Teluk Cempedak beach in Kuantan a few days back and I was shocked to see reclamation work going on. What, I asked my friends, was the reason for filling up the sea along this beautiful beach?
No one had an answer; they could only shrug their shoulders. I just couldn't believe my eyes that soon the Teluk Cempedak beach will be no more. No wonder they developed another bay, Teluk Tonkang, some distance away, but this place is not as nice as Teluk Cempedak.
I wonder what happened to the environmentalist groups, the consumers' associations and other NGOs? Isn't anyone interested in commenting or protesting against this absurdity?
Teluk Cempedak, if I may say so, is the only attraction in Kuantan and once it's gone, I can bet that even fewer tourists will come. Perhaps the richer ones will go to Cherating, but what about the ordinary Kuantan folks?
