The Society for the Promotion of Human Rights, Malaysia (Proham) expresses great disappointment with the administration of the federal government in the way police action is impacting negatively the state of human rights in Malaysia.

We would like to remind the government that in 2004 when the royal commission of inquiry into the police was established, there had been a great public outcry on the police, especially in the way people were arrested and remanded for investigations. The commission’s report which was released in 2005 drew up an agenda for the professional conduct of the police consistent with international human rights standards.

The current crackdown on politicians and now news editors is creating great public alarm, especially in the way the arrests are taking place.

We strong feel that while the police have the right to question individuals, it must be done consistent with the nature of the offence and in conformity with human rights standards. There is an apparent neglect of compliance with human rights standards.

Proham urges the federal government, especially the Home Affairs Ministry, to urgently review the situation and work with various stakeholders to restore the situation to peace and harmony.

It is of utmost importance that the prime minister addresses not only Parliament on the current situation but also the general public.

KUTHUBUL ZAMAN is president and DENISON JAYASOORIA is secretary-general of the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights, Malaysia (Proham).
