It’s not the majority bullying the minority

Many reports and comments have emerged since the cross protest in Taman Medan. Some of these reports have attributed the incident to bullying of the minority by the majority. Simply put, those who bullied others have drawn their courage and insolence from the fact that they are the majority in this country.

I think we should be careful to draw conclusions in this manner. Fifty Malays/Muslims cannot represent the majority of Malays /Muslims in Taman Medan, much less in this country. I am glad to note that the Group of 25 (G25) and the Malay professionals Forum have respectively come up with their statements condemning the protest perpetrated by those in Taman Medan.

I am sure there are among us many other right-minded Malay/Muslim organisations waiting to provide the same views as expressed by G25 and the Malay Professionals Forum.

I have not lost hope yet; I still believe the majority in this country are reasonable and sensible people.  I believe they are not natural bigots and racists out to belittle and bully others simply because they are the majority.

I think we must get our focus right; what happened in Taman Medan and also in other similar instances are due to depraved politicians and bureaucrats abusing their power. It is not the tyranny of the majority; it is the gross abuse of power by the ruling elites and their cohorts. Why so?

They are unable to explain their incompetence and corruption, so they incite and create hatred by appealing to sectarian support. They apply double-standards and offer perverted interpretations of law to create division among the people.

But for goodness sake, please look at us among Malaysians. I think the majority are least concerned with the orchestrated quarrels being staged every day. So I think it is wrong to say the majority are bullying the minority because most of us are too busy earning a living to look at the cross or the crescent.

Please get this right; it is the way this country is governed that creates and promotes bullying and insolent behaviour. When the authorities practice double-standards, some recalcitrant racists know they will not be punished for the incitement they have caused. When the authorities tacitly promote their own parochial agenda, some simpletons and racists just have to take the cue from there.

When the authorities are weak and incompetent to act sternly, trouble-makers are emboldened to try their luck.

To me, the apparent heightened racism and bigotry we experience in recent time is not due to the majority becoming racists or bigots. On the contrary, these are orchestrated incidences due to the government being weak and opportunistic. They condone racism to buy time to remain in power.

Politicians are too lucratively rewarded in this country. They will do anything to stay in power, regardless of the consequences. We Malaysians - Malays, Chinese, and Indians - deserve better than a bunch of depraved politicians in Taman Medan longing to get back to power in the state.
