My congratulations to Anwar Ibrahim on his release from Sungai Buloh. Justice has finally prevailed, and Pak Lah has finally stepped out of Mahathir's shadow.

The way I see it, this should be the beginning of a better Malaysia in the making. The last 22 years of fear and repression are finally, hopefully, coming to an end. In unceremoniously dumping Anwar, Mahathir without realising it, self-inflicted the worst blot on his reign.

In fact, Mahathir is the one who should be charged for corruption, as he surrounded himself with a bunch of corrupt ministers and party stalwarts and allowed corruption to metastasise through the Malaysian body.

Finally when it came to picking a successor, he could find no one else but Mr Clean - Pak Lah. Mahathir's two greatest contributions to the country were quitting, and picking Pak Lah as his successor.

I hope Anwar doesn't make the same mistake that Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah made in crawling back into Umno after having publicly declared in 1987 that he had burnt his bridges. The only thing Ku Li burnt was himself.

Staying with the opposition can bring positive changes to our country and Anwar can assist Pak Lah to weed out corruption, cronyism, nepotisim, religious extremism and bigotry.

The most pressing problem to solve is the decaying education system which has become a factory for churning out graduate taxi drivers and gardeners. I say bring back English-medium schools, so that we have yet another choice for our children.

The choice that parents make will ultimately tell us what our people want. There are so many non-Chinese in Chinese schools. Why? Can't we then reintroduce English schools and see what happens?

Let the people make their own choices. If our graduates are proficient in English, we could also be a net exporter of quality intellectual labour like some South Asian countries. The unemployment figures will drop and foreign exchange reserves will shoot up.

One will notice that English-speaking Malaysians are the ones who mix best among the races - like those of us who went to school in the '50s and '60s.

Pak Lah, from the time you became PM you have been doing things in your own gentlemanly way. Keep up the good work.

Malaysiakini is a wonderful source of feedback for you and we will tell you if you do wrong. Mahathir in all his years not once said that he was a PM. for all Malaysians but you have said it several times and therein lies the difference.

Keep up the good work, Pak Lah. May God bless you.
