• Anwar, be careful choosing new friends

  • As a Malaysian and a long-time but distant admirer of Anwar Ibrahim, I am very happy that he was released from prison and getting the medical treatment he so badly needs.

When he was in politics, I was so hopeful that he would be different from the neo-feudal lords that have strangled Umno for such a long time. However, when Anwar came to power he, too was apparently caught in that web of intrigue and duplicity, the hallmark of Umno's politics.

In their impatience for power and wealth, the men surrounding him were no different from the men surrounding other Umno leaders, and in order to maintain his position, Anwar was caught fast in this web.

I pray to Allah that Anwar recovers speedily and not for one minute do I think he will not return to politics.

I sincerely wish he does, not to seek vindication (or perhaps revenge even), but to use this second chance to right the wrongs of times gone by and to use this time to live and implement the reformasi spirit.

I hope too, that this time he will choose his friends and advisors more carefully.
