In the mass delight over the acquittal of Anwar Ibrahim, we can see for ourselves people from all walks of life coming to congratulate, shake his hands and even hugging his battered body.

One can also see the surprising phenomenon of pro-Umno leaders and sympathisers - including those who have done their worst to tarnish Anwar's Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) - flying over to Munich, Germany just to see the man and wish him the best of health.

But these people are not the true heroes. The true heroes are the ones who joined PKR after Anwar was arrested to continue the struggle for justice and truth. They had no political background, no training in politics, no interest in politics, no desire to profit from politics. They sacrificed and lost all but their pride and principles in joining this new party.

Many lost their jobs and have since resorted to finding alternative means of earning a livelihood. Others had faces and bodies streaked with sweat and blood, and eyes red with chemicals, as they bravely stood at the forefront of peaceful demonstrations.

Veterans shed tears and expressed their sadness every single day during Anwar's court proceedings and repeatedly asked the same question over and over again - 'When will Anwar be freed?

The once comfortable lifestyles of these PKR members were ruined but they have never sacrificed their principles for the sake of comfort. They have strived day in and day out to make ends meet because employers do not want 'dissidents' working in their companies.

And many PKR 'cawangan' (branches) and 'bahagian' (divisions) could not even meet their quorum for meetings due to a lack of supporters.

And now, we see certain pathetic people running to Germany and fawning over Anwar while bleating that they were the ones who fought for his release.

Indeed, it is these same people who turned their backs on Anwar and conceived every intricate detail of the plot to destroy PKR and all those who held on to the principles of justice dear to their hearts.

Dear Anwar, we would like to ask for one thing and one thing only. We may not have political positions and we may not be those who are influential. But do not take away what we have strived for all these years and give it to two-faced liars whom we have suffered enough of.

As we return to being nobodies and see the sudden emergence of 'leaders' and 'new supporters' in our 'cawangan' and 'bahagian', we hope that you will never forget us and may the flame of reformasi keep on burning.
