Hantuimc's letter complains of racism in the UK. I am a white Englishman, married to a Malaysian Chinese, with a black (half Nigerian) brother. My family has been multiracial since my brother's birth in 1948 and, whilst it was a victim of racism in the past, we are all aware that racism is neither normal or acceptable to Britons today.

Hantuimc's arguments are spurious. I shan't reiterate what others have said already, but instead concentrate on matters that nobody else has rebutted.

Firstly he suggests, on the basis that an undercover TV reporter exposed half a dozen police cadets as being racist, that we Brits have not moved forward since the death of Stephen Lawrence in 1993.

Stephen's family do not agree with Hantuimc. They were happy with the MacPherson report and its 70 recommendations. Much progress has been made in implementing those and the home secretary regularly reports on the progress.

The TV programme exposed weaknesses in the selection of police officers, in particular the difficulty of weeding out officers with covertly racist views. Unfortunately, there is no DNA test for racism. The programme makers should be, and were, applauded.

However, one cannot leap from the exposure of half a dozen bigotted police cadets to the idea that the British are racists. That would be like suggesting that Malaysians are criminals because a minority of them commit crimes.

Secondly he talks about the rise of 'right-wing parties'. Well, there is only one party which supports any discrimination on the basis of race and that is the British National Party (BNP). It is true that they have managed to gain five council seats, more than any racist party has ever managed in England before.

But to what extent does this suggest that we are racist? Well, to the extent that of the 19,894 councillors in England, five belong to the BNP. They gained those seats through winning anti- Labour protest votes, and will most certainly lose those seats at the next election. They are a tiny party with tiny support, and only makes the news because we British find them extreme and deeply offensive.

I recall the Monster Raving Loony Party gaining a council seat some years ago, but as a medical man I doubt Hantuimc would have diagnosed that we Brits were all lunatics. Yet, on similar evidence he concludes that we are racist.

My white family and have actively fought against racism since at least the 1930s when my grandmother took part in the Battle of Cable Street. I don't anticipate ever seeing the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, entirely rid of racism. Hence you won't find me denying that there are small minority of British racists (of all races).

There are racists everywhere, and we will never entirely rid ourselves of them, I suspect. But in the UK we do have laws that prohibit anyone being treated less favourably because of their race, and laws that punish racially motivated crimes more harshly than non-racially motivated crimes.

Hantuimc suggests that the British police won't take action if you report a racist crime ... well that is quite simply a lie. He cynically invites people to believe that we do not jail racists. A foolish thing to do on a distinguished website that is read worldwide by knowledgeable people.

For those who believe him, here is just one example of our anti-racist laws sending people to jail. There are many, many others.

Hantuimc has the right to challenge racism here in the UK, the law will support him and provides the tools to do so. Every significant politician and party will support him too.

Hantuimc might want to challenge racial discrimination in Malaysia on his return. But will he find himself supported by the law and every significant politician/political party? Or might he find himself falling afoul of the law?
