I am rather surprised that PAS Youth had lodged a police report against Mingguan Malaysia columnist Astora Jabat for 'insulting Islam" over his article 'Salahguna azan mencemarkan imej Islam' .

I read the article and found it extremely educational about the debates on the azan in Egypt which is a Muslim majority country. The Egyptian government has control of 40,000 mosques in Cairo alone.

The article points to the dilemma which has not been resolved since the 80s. The call to prayer from the 40,000-odd mosques in Cairo has affected the solemnity of the call to prayer ("menyebabkan orang-orang yang tidak biasa dengan Kaherah merasakan mereka seolah-olah berada di 'funfair' seketika").

The article also informs us on how religious scholars and the government in Egypt have tried to find a resolution about the calling of azan at different times according to the way the muezzin (the person who calls the azan) of different schools perform it.

I cannot find anything in the article as 'insulting Islam' and insulting Islam in Malaysia at that.

Of course, PAS Youth is entitled to their own opinion and they have a right to their opinion including a right to be wrong. However, their act of accusing Astora Jabat of insulting Islam has impeded the writer of his right to say his piece, including his right to be wrong.

Why has PAS Youth taken it upon themselves to be our moral guardians? After their fiery speeches at the PAS general assembly, surely they have more worthwhile concerns about developing the direction of their leadership than to get embroiled in a non-issue?
