I refer to the letter by Helmy Haja Mydin titled Will moral decay stop with more tudung-wearers?
I would like to point out that I do not lay blame on non-tudung wearers for the sexual crimes being perpetrated by sick, depraved maniacs in today's society. I am all for imposing capital punishment on these maniacs and will support the authorities for imposing this sentence on rapists, molesters and those committing incest.
In tandem with this, I support modest dressing by the female sex of our society and among those who would like to see responsible action by both genders. Helmy has misunderstood the gist of my words and I do not blame him.
My intention is to ask society in general to retain our traditional values of social and moral decency. Asian values are slowly but surely being eroded over time and our sense of dressing is one of the root causes.
Helmy is right in asking the Education Ministry to teach moral and social values from the primary level itself, but he has sadly misunderstood the intentions of my letter.
I am merely repeating what my religion asks of its believing women. Dress modestly when in public. I am not saying that it is only women who need to behave and dress modestly. Allah SWT also commands us men to protect our modesty and to control ourselves first.
My intentions were pure and I did not intend to offend anyone by stating the obvious commandments of Allah to us Muslims. Non-Muslims are free to live as they want but they are still governed by the laws of the land.
I do not expect Helmy to agree with me. He has his views and I have mine. To each their own.
