Many have criticised TV3 for its coverage of the convergence of the foreign workers at the many tourist sites in Kuala Lumpur during the recent festive break.

Some have branded the coverage on the station's 'Buletin Utama' broadcast on Nov 15 as 'racist'. Actually one of the letter writers has shown himself as a greater racist, when he questioned the Malaysian woman of Indian origin on her right to feel threatened by the presence of so many foreigners in one place when she herself actually is from a similar origin.

How sure are we that all the foreigners who converged at those popular spots were actually legally here? The general estimation of illegal entrants into this country seems to be above a million.

The authorities seem to have accepted the fact, and will only act against such illegal workers when specific operations are launched against such entrants. Otherwise our authorities are extremely 'tolerant'.

Illegal foreign workers have engaged in some anti-social activities, even in murders of our citizens, but we are still pondering on how to handle this massive problem that has emerged due to our own actions and lack of control.

Viewed from this angle, the TV3 report is justified as it highlighted the matter to ensure that the authorities remain vigilant. A large congregation of foreign workers in Kuala Lumpur could create problems not only to Malaysians and foreign tourists, but also to themselves as they have their own ethnic divisions.

It is a fact that most foreign workers in this country do not mix with the local population, except, maybe with those who work with them at their workplace. Their interaction with others is minimal and the news that a large number of them have seeped into the country without legal approval is definitely causing concern to many Malaysians.

TV3 has merely conveyed this message to one and all. Their angle of reporting definitely seems to have taken into consideration the massive number of the illegal immigrant workers in the country and the number of anti-social activities that have taken place involving them recently.

Also, the blatant disregard of many of them to seize the 'amnesty' opportunity provided by the our government has heightened worries that these illegal immigrants have no intention of returning and hope to be granted permanent resident status eventually.

Therefore, instead of blaming TV3 for its concerned reporting, blame the system and the inaction of the authorities and the individuals who can't give a damn as about the laws of this country.
