Recently, my close relative was arrested and detained overnight in a police station for an offence which he did not commit. When I asked the Investigating Officer (IO) for the reasons of the detention, he had the cheek to tell me that I would have to wait until the next day to find out why!

When I pressed further, he answered that under the Constitution, the police could detain a person for up to 14 days and the detention could be done although no prior investigations had been done beforehand.

I was shocked and dumbfounded because if this is the case, then no one is safe from police abuse of power. You can be arrested and jailed just because someone has made a police report against you.

I thought that at the very least, a preliminary reason investigation is done by the police after a report is lodged before a person is arrested. But apparently, this is not the case. A person is arrested and then investigations are done.
