I refer to the letter Be fair to economic migrants in which the author seems to suggest that the Malaysian government has not been fair to migrant workers. The letter was obviously written to wrench sympathy from the Malaysian public and to prick their conscience.
Such as the accusation that we, Malaysian employers, are underpaying migrant workers. By Malaysian standards RM250 maybe small wages for a maid, but apparently it is attractive enough for some to make their way into our country rather than languish in their own country unemployed.
The arguments here are quite straight forward; if you come in this country to work, you should come in legally. The author somehow ignores the fact that what the Malaysian government is dealing with in the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants are just that - illegal behaviour.
It is a crime to smuggle yourself into the country. It is a crime to seek employment illegally. Sure we can sympathise with those who toiled so hard and are not paid. And many a times, the blame falls on Malaysian employers.
The truth of the matter, however, is that the illegal workers are contracted out by their own 'kepala'. It is the 'kepala' who acts as the contact person with the Malaysian employer for the illegal workers. And more often than not, it is the 'kepala' who absconds with the money.
The author somehow also does not understand the security risk and the rise in criminal activities associated with the illegal immigrants. They are people with no identities and there are no possible ways to trace them.
I must say that most Malaysians support the crackdown on illegals in the country.
