I applaud the High Court decision yesterday dismissing the libel suit against Malaysiakini.

In accepting the defence of qualified privilege put forth by Malaysiakini, the decision sends a clear signal that justice will be on the side of bold, independent but responsible journalism.

Coming in the wake of the government’s crackdown on the voices of dissent with the unfettered use of archaic but draconian laws, it is therefore a victory for a democratic Malaysia.

I congratulate Malaysiakini for blazing the trail in investigative journalism and reporting without fear or favour and maintaining fairness and impartiality in its coverage.
