We finally have an official report which said MH17 was brought down by a BUK missile fired from pro-Russian held territory in Ukraine.

I am glad our PM has promised firm actions following this report. But before long, Russia has already rejected the report. Russia did not even participate in the investigation to begin with.

Individuals involved in the perpetration of this tragedy must be brought to justice. But I think it is more than that. It is time to hold the country or countries involved in this incident accountable, too.

The country that made the BUK missile, allowing it to be transported across borders and fired in the most cavalier manner should be asked to apologise and pay compensation. The compensation should not be restricted to families of victims alone but also to MAS, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Australia. Imagine the dent on the reputation and anguish MAS has suffered as an airline because of this tragedy. No amount of insurance could ever make a difference to MAS again.

Everyone knows Russia is a superpower and therefore it is probably futile to force any decision directly on them. But a superpower, too, must own up to its actions and responsibility. Otherwise it is just a rogue state no difference from another third world tribal country.

Malaysia, the Netherlands and Australia must forge a global coalition to leverage against Russia. The global coalition must pressure Russia, through sanctions if needed, to own up and pay. Russia and the rest of the world must understand this is not politics but issues relating to human suffering and injustice.

This is not singling out Russia for punishment. This is called responsibility and accountability. Citizens all over the world are asked to follow the laws and be responsible. Why must national governments be the exception?
