To Mohd Anuar Taib, chair, Pacific Northwest LNG; Mohd Sidek, chair, Petroliam Nasional Berhad; and Adnan Zainal Abidin, CEO, Pacific Northwest LNG
Dear Sirs,
As leaders of concerned indigenous communities, community and conservation groups in northern British Columbia, we wish to warn you of the enormous opposition to your Pacific NorthWest LNG project.
In their eagerness to attract your investment to Canada, our federal and provincial governments have misled you, your partners and the people of Malaysia - much as they have misled Canadians.
You have been told your project has broad public support. This is not the case. Polls have found that a majority of Canadians are gravely concerned about the environmental risks of fracking, the method that would be used to extract the gas you wish to export via Pacific NorthWest LNG.
Our governments have not properly consulted Canada’s Indigenous (First Nations) peoples about your project to transport gas to Canada’s west coast, even though they are legally required to do so.
The undersigned hereditary leaders from six First Nations in the Skeena River region firmly oppose your project on the grounds that we have not been properly consulted and accommodated. We are taking our government to court to force the cancellation of your project’s permit. Recent court victories suggest we will win.
In approving your project, which would become Canada’s largest climate polluter, our governments have exposed you to further risk. Only by stopping your project can Canadians hope to meet our global climate commitments under the Paris accord, which our Parliament has now ratified.
Your proposed project poses unacceptable risks to wild salmon, which are integral to our diet and our culture. Western science and traditional knowledge lead us to believe that the only way to mitigate the risks your project poses is to prevent it from proceeding.
Regardless of how much money you promise to spend, you cannot - and will not - buy our consent.
We understand you are contemplating your final investment decision for Pacific NorthWest LNG. Our decision has already been made.
We have decided to stop your project, which undermines First Nations rights, weakens our cultures, accelerates climate change and directly threatens our most precious resource - our salmon.
Yours truly,
