Lest some forget, this country is not ‘People’s Republic of Malaysia’

The ground sentiment is swelling in the wake of an overdose of denials, restrictions, threats, intimidations and of course, the latest ‘Enid Blyton’ twist being dished out by the powers-that-be in Malaysia.

Lest anyone forget or conveniently believe otherwise, Malaysia is a democratic nation that has been and always will see its citizens uphold our Constitutional Monarchy.

Just because some unilateral decisions are being made to bring in the seeming ‘investments’ worth billions of ringgit from the People’s Republic of China into the country lately, it does not give anyone that power to lord over in Malaysia like they have done so well over centuries in China.

This nation of ours is and always will be defended as a democratic Malaysia. And peaceful rallies are the hallmark of caring Malaysians proven five times over and over again as seen from the civil society’s Bersih movement.

Lest we forget, too, it is this non-violent approach to suffocating and pressing issues or challenges that has stood us well from pre-independence till now, except for the politically induced racial riots of 1969.

Hence, what is all this ‘Enid Blyton’ style of updates we are being fed? It seems now that Maria Chin Abdullah had some ‘documents’ with her in her office that smells of a terror-linked rat! And so she is being detained under a law meant for the war against terror.

Public opinion is getting more entrenched with such press statements that spin around what seems like an Enid Blyton series. And this will only make more citizens to cry foul and keep pouring peacefully onto the streets in support and in defence of a clean, fair, just and democratic Malaysia.

People know and will not want nor allow a China-fashioned curtailing of public opinion and peaceful protest. This the Najib Abdul Razak bandwagon seems oblivious, of as their ministers keep belting all kinds of threats and naming all kinds of laws.

To even now cite the CIA as the enemy of Malaysia is not only foolish but gives BN the face of a desperado.

Meanwhile, the institutions of government and the vanguards of national security have much to answer in so far as news of Malaysians doing terror-related work under the Islamic State (IS) banner in other far away lands; they have much to answer and worry about the raids, kidnappings and pirate activities on our shorelines which the world is well-informed of.

But to threaten, deny citizens of their basic constitutional rights, and wield the antiquated laws of oppression in this time and age is not doing Najib any good. It certainly is compounding the entire BN political allies into tough spots and tight corners.

Pray reason, sensibility and prudence permeates the hearts and minds of all those who fail to recognise that Malaysians by and large are democratic in spirit and will succeed in making their nation a beacon of democratic hope and standard-bearer of non-violent, peace inspired land.

Anything less will destroy even Umno’s long-standing legacy of the past glorious period.
