For the past few years, residents in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, Selangor have been waiting for both the Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKj) and the township developer to build public amenities as provided for under the approved master plan.

According to the master plan, three lots of reserve land were to be used to build to be a hawkers centre, a mosque and a primary school. Unfortunately, to the residents' disappointment, these have not materialised.

First, the land that was allocated for the hawkers centre behind the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman branch campus has been turned into a commercial car park operated by a private company. The same too for the lot reserved for the building of the mosque.

These two lots of land were supposed to have been handed over to the Selangor state government a long time ago. When we residents made a check with the MPKj, their officers said they were 'not sure' about the status of the land. One wonders how the lots fell into the hands of private companies which are using them to make money.

And the land reserved for the primary school has been occupied by an illegal factory complete with housing for workers for the past three years.

Despite many complaint made by residents to MPKj, no action has been taken so far against these companies. Perhaps it is time for the federal government and the Anti-Corruption Agency to investigate how land reserved for public amenities can be handed over for private companies for business ventures.

They should also investigate why the situation has been allowed to carry on for three years without any action being taken by the MPKj.
