Saying there is employment based on race is totally inaccurate, business is always business with the highest priority being profit. Businessmen of any race would employ those who would give them the best value in their business. There's no doubt that a majority of private sector companies put profit as their highest priority and not the race of its employees.

Only the government or semi-government sector will have the luxury to employ based on race, and needless to say that the public sector is a major source of employment opportunities. In the private sector all fresh graduates will have to compete on equal footing but if there's preference, it could be due to cultural similarities or racial perception.

But such preferences rank low and again most employers will employ the cheapest and most qualified employee. With business pressure coming from every angle, fresh graduates working in the private sector will have to work really hard.

In fact its common knowledge that there are numerous giant conglomerates known to offer low starting salaries and squeeze every ounce of labour from their employees.

The other factor of Malaysian culture is to employ based on family or business connections. Such a practice is not ethical as it deprives the more deserving candidate. But in the private sector such a practice will only backfire on the employer themselves if the employed family member is not qualified for the job and at the end of the day the business will suffer.

Unfortunately in the public sector there are no competitors and therefore no mechanism to ascertain if the organisation is running in its most efficient manner.

With the number of jobless graduates ever increasing, the only way to resolve this is to increase the number of available jobs. The only way to do this is allow the private sector to flourish by removing discriminatory business policies, especially those based on ethnicity.

Such policy in the public sector should also be removed to increase its efficiency. With the increasing efficiency, the government can enlarge the cake and provide everyone with a share.

With additional funds available, the government can use it to assist and open up more opportunities for the poor.
