This is one of the most harrowing and alarming stories that I have heard in a long time. It is reminiscent of the storyline in Midnight Express !

As a foreigner now living here for three years, I knew that corruption, brutality and total disregard for lawful process is fairly common here, but the above story is shocking. If this is how the country's police force operates, then I think it will be 2050 or even 2100 before Malaysia can ever be recognised as a truly developed nation.

The events detailed should be investigated thoroughly by an independent body, and action taken against all the officers involved in this disgusting series of events. There is no excuse for treating innocent people this way.

There are obviously no checks and balances, nor professional supervision or legal protection for innocent victims in such circumstances. Malaysians need to wake up and deal with such blatant disregard for human rights and presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

What a sad day for Malaysia.
