The issue of all undergraduates wearing a 'tudung' for the International Islamic University's convocations is a non-issue that does not, and should not, need the cabinet or the prime minister's intervention.

Our constitution is clear - there is religious freedom for all citizens and as such it is up to the individual to decide for herself whether she would like to cover her head or not. This should have never been an issue in the first place, more so at universities which are places to promote higher thinking.

In an era where our university educational standards are alleged to have fallen, I think the fact that universities are concentrating on such issues makes one wonder if they're trying to distract attention from the myriad problems that really need urgent, remedial action.
