The prime minister's move to set up an independent inquiry to investigate the naked video clip while welcome, is another short-term solution to a long-term problem. This inquiry will come up with more recommendations, maybe another 125, to show the Chinese government that Malaysia treasures its visitors.
These will get printed on nice glossy paper and if you're lucky, you can queue up to get one, just like the last time.
If the recommendations of The Royal Commission to Enhance the Operations and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police in May had been implemented, we would already have the independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (PCMC) to check alleged police abuses and complaints against the force.
Thus, there would be no need to set up this current independent inquiry or for that matter, an inquiry every time there is a complaint. The police should have no fear, as the PCMC will separate the rotten apples from the good, trustworthy and hardworking police officers.
In the current case, the outcome of the inquiry has already been prejudged by the deputy IGP and deputy home minister in that the police did no wrong.
So, I expect more recommendations rather than any punitive action taken against the rotten apples. I hope I will be proven wrong and we'll see more action, less talk.
