  • Fathima Idris intimated in her letter The woman in transsexuals - or is it? says that legal recognition will not help transsexuals.

I am an Australian transsexual with legal recognition and I have found it extremely helpful. While I do have occasional embarrassing moments with doctors as Idris mentioned, such as when asked about periods, these are very small moments in life, easily fixed by a quick explanation.

I can now live my life happily and normally, with very few difficulties. In the past, I struggled greatly and painfully. Am I a woman? The answer is probably yes 'for most practical means and purposes'.

For many years, I was suicidal and depressive. I am now productive and happy and am making a far greater contribution to society. I have also experienced far more love in my 10 years of female life than in the 17 years of adult male life that I struggled through.

I don't think brain chemistry matters. The true issue is human diversity. In all societies, people experience difficulties trying to live in a role to which they are poorly adapted for.

Why try to force square pegs into round holes? It is not only better for the individuals, but for society as a whole to allow its people to fulfil their potential without hindrance rather than swimming against the stream of life.
