Of all the letters criticising and some appreciating the late M Moorthy's battle in the High Court and the Syariah Court, the letter from Haji Mokhtar Stork was the most enlightening and hit the nail on the head.

He is absolutely right. Most non-Muslims in this country convert for material gain, ie, for good business opportunities from the government and for promotion especially in the armed forces, police and the civil service. They don't convert for the love and faith of Islam but for selfish reasons. It is used as a tool for their own personal gain and progress.

And God (Allah) knows that only too well. Following their conversion, they largely adhere to their previous lifestyles whether halal or haram . Now does God want these characters to be treated as Muslims and given a Muslim burials when the time comes?

Mokhtar says 'no' and all sane thinking people will fully agree with him. God certainly does not want hypocrites. Then why does Jakim go on ambushing the soulless dead bodies of converts? Their main job is to teach those converts who lovingly converted to Islam the proper teachings of the religion. They should ignore the hypocrite converts, converts who are too frightened to tell their wives and immediate family members about their conversion.

To always uphold the good name of Islam, the various state religion departments should only accept conversions done for the total of Islam and its teachings. No married man or woman should be allowed to convert in secrecy. The consent of the spouse and children is a vital prerequisite otherwise the good name of the religion will be affected. Imagine the pain and suffering of the wife and children at the death bed of a hypocritic convert.

Religion is a personal matter and must be kept as such. The state should never interfere in the matters of religion. Only then will the religions grow lovingly and reach out to the people. A man may leave his religion to go to into another if he thought that he could find solace but might revert if he so wished if he failed to find any answers.

This is freedom of religion and freedom of worship. God did not implicate or complicate things for man. Man did this himself by misinterpreting or re-interpreting religion for his own selfish interest (the recent Islamic Family Law amendments are a case in point).

What had been done to Moorthy's family is a great sin. Will God ever forgive us for this misdeed - to be informed at the eleventh hour that he is not what he was. And will our civil court judges ever be able to make a judicious decision reflecting the true intention of the federal constitution?

In the interest of continued peace and harmony in our country, all sane-thinking leaders in the Barisan Nasional government - particularly the non-Muslim leaders - should persuade and convince their Muslim colleagues to make suitable amendments to the federal constitution so that no citizen is deprived of his or her legitimate rights.
